To improve further development of direct container service between Shantou and Taiwan and intensify cooperation between ports in the two areas, on the morning of August 20, a promotion of direct container service between Shantou and Taiwan was held in Shantou, which was jointly hosted by Taiwan Port Services Corp. Ltd. and Shantou Port Administration with sponsored by China United Lines Ltd.

Since the direct calling service commenced on January 18, 2009 between Shantou and Taiwan, the time of cargo transportation and cost of logistics have been dramatically reduced, which has been beneficial to both the shippers and consignees at Shantou and Taiwan, thus an  annual container volumes increase by 23％. Mr. Sun Guanghui, Vice Party Secretary of Shantou stated that Shantou City will attempt to make the Guangdong-Taiwan Economic & Trade Cooperation Experimental Area to be the bridgehead   to promote the economics and trading between Guangdong and Taiwan. Mr. Xiao Dingxun, President of Taiwan Port Services Corp. Ltd., introduced a series of preferential measures by Taiwan Ports to promote more direct trading and transshipment cargoes between China and Taiwan.
